The most popular types of rats in the UK are the Brown Rat (Rattus norvegicus) and Black Rat (Rattus rattus). If you see one rat in the garden, chances are that there are probably many more in a nest nearby. Rats can be hard to spot due to their suspicious, nocturnal nature and don’t like running around in daylight, so you typically won’t see them around unless the infestation has become severe.
The rodents usually make nests along garden perimeters, inside thick bushes, under wooden decking, under or in the shed, in compost bins and inside the the loft or garage.
Rats carry many harmful diseases and bacteria that can expose your family and pets to disease and illness, they eat, contaminate fruit and vegetables. They can gnaw through electrical wiring and water pipes, that has the potential to cause fires and flooding.
Signs of a rats are:
- Dark brown or black cylindrical shaped rat droppings 1-2 cm in length, discovered in the garden, shed, garage, near decking or in loft or attic spaces.
- Rat burrows approximately 5-10 cm in the garden area.
- Greasy marks and rat footprint tracks along garden perimeters.
- Gnaw marks: along the wood fences or wooden sheds in the garden, on electrical wires or on items stored in the loft or attic space.
- Nesting material gathered around rat hole or burrows.
Eliminating rats quickly can help minimise exposure from property damage, disease and protect your family’s health and well-being.
We first conduct a Risk Assessment for the safety of residents, pets and the public.
We then carry out a survey and inspection of the garden to search for fresh tracks, droppings, gnaw marks, nesting locations and provide recommendations that may help with rat prevention.
Rodent control is achieved by utilising UK approved professional pest control products and methods, whilst following the Campaign for Responsible Rodenticide Use (CRRU) Code of Conduct, to keep residents, pets and wildlife safe and protected.
Effective rat control isn’t achieved by a single homeowner and is a team effort that requires the cooperation of your neighbours, to drive rats away for good.
Please note that despite pest control treatments, the rodents may return if we identify the potential source of the rats outside of your property boundary or coming from your neighbours, within communal building fabric or linked floors. If this is the case, we will advise you to notify the relevant local authority as only they have the power to investigate an Environmental Health Officers investigation and take any necessary action.
If we find evidence of the rat infestation emanating from private or public sewers, we will advise you to obtain a sewer inspection or works from a specialist drainage company, before we carry out treatments.
Rats can be easily attracted to food waste and food stacks, so the best practice is to keep your home perfectly clean and appropriately sealed.
Seal the compost bins tightly and make sure they are not leaking. Throw out the garbage as often as you can. Store the food in a safe and unreachable place.
